Rotten egg broke in my compost

by Hillary Fairbanks
(Brooklyn, NY)

I was turning my compost today (large family uses it). There was a whole egg- not sure how long it had been in there. It broke and smelled horrible.

It was kind of everywhere so all I could think to do was to put it back into the compost to continue it's breakdown process.

I am noticing that everything it touched smells terrible- my sifter-- which I think will air out. My harvested compost... and my active compost is getting hotter and as it heats, less smell. Do I worry about this? Anything I can add or do?

HELP!
Hillary

No Worries

This absolutely not a problem except of course for the temporary nasty smell.

The egg will add a certain nitrogen rich bit to your final result.

Carry on.
