The Back Porch Compost Tumbler
A Small Easy to Move Tumbler

The Back Porch Compost Tumbler is the smallest of the tumblers made by ComposTumbler and the only one they make from plastic.

The Back Porch Compost Tumbler was first designed and sold in 1997. Its compact size makes it easy to keep on your deck or porch. The frame also features wheels - a great idea. It makes it easy to move the unit around to where you want to either load it up or empty it.

The Law of the Batch

Most people will add material to their back porch compost tumbler every day or two. But, remember this is a batch composter and the time to get finished compost doesn't start until you stop making new additions. Also, because the Back Porch Compost Tumbler is small you won't get the heat build up needed for the fast 14 day composting the larger units promise.

Winter Composting

The Back Porch Compost Tumbler is made from double walled plastic sandwiching 3/4 inch (2 cm) air cells. This insulates the compost and allows it to continue to be used through the winter. Even with this insulation expect the composting process to slow down a lot through the winter. But, the good news is it is safe to keep the compost material in the composter right through the season.

Problems

This composter does not have a lot of problems. A few people report having a hard time putting it together. But further reading suggests that even an assembly moron will succeed eventually and that a call to their service center will guide through your troubles.

There is a drain on the bottom of the compost barrel. If you are using the tumbler on a deck or porch put down a bowl to catch the liquid that drains out. It will be dark in color and you won't be happy cleaning it off your floor.
